Vocational skills training in Lebanon

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with commercial and industrial equipment supplier Medevco SAL organized two training sessions in October 2019 on Japanese manufacturer Hitachi’s construction excavators to support vocational skills training in Lebanon in the context of UNIDO project "Market-based Construction Skills Training for All".

Twenty participants from host and refugee communities in the north of Lebanon received intensive training on safety procedures, conducting daily inspections, basic preventive measures, and driving tips for the excavators. The training is part of a series of work-integrated trainings organized under the project, which aims to create economic opportunities and jobs in the construction sector. By engaging with the private sector, the training helped to enhance trainees’ skills based on market demands, and enables them to access jobs in a market which is showing a growing demand for experienced operators of excavation machines.

The project, which is the fourth consecutive project funded by the Government of Japan in the north of Lebanon, will also support the creation of a Vocational Training Center on Construction Works as well as the development of training curricula for three training courses on electrical, renewable energy, and Heating-Ventilation-Air Conditioning (HVAC) installation works. The project will thus assist in developing and upgrading the skills of 30 trainers and 200 trainees from host and refugee communities.
