Upgrading Belarusian automotive industry using new technologies

The second phase of the project, executed by UNIDO with financial support from the Russian Federation,  was launched in March 2018. The project focuses on practical shop-floor interventions in pilot companies, including industrial upgrading using Industry 4.0 technologies.

The shop-floor interventions included provision of training to national experts on lean management and Kaizen as well as their practical applications in selected pilot companies. UNIDO interventions contributed significantly to cut costs and enhance productivity in targeted companies, resulting in reported annual savings of  BYN 1,000,000 (USD 500,000). One of the major events during 2018 was the Conference “From lean manufacturing to Industry 4.0” in Minsk on 17 October 2018. The conference addressed issues such as the potentials of Industry 4.0 and the convergence of technologies for industrial modernization and upgrading as well as avenues to enhance shop floor interventions with Industry 4.0 technologies.

In 2019, the project team will continue implementing the shop floor assistance programme, and will introduce the Digital Kaizen approach to a pilot company. Another milestone will be a Conference on Industry 4.0 in Minsk in May 2019, which will convene international and national stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the new industrial revolution in the Belarusian automotive sector and informed on the progress made by the project.
