Unlocking the potential of sustainable honey production in Ethiopia

Renowned for its abundant honey production potential, the Ethiopia’s Oromia region is witnessing profound changes through initiatives that empower local beekeepers, with a particular focus on female entrepreneurs like Ms. Kibe Dame from Jimma zone. Recently, Ms. Dame and other beekeepers successfully secured a substantial honey export deal, highlighting the project's role in facilitating international market access for Ethiopian honey.

The Global Market Access Program (GMAP) implemented by UNIDO and funded by Norad, is driving significant transformations in the honey industry. The initiative addresses pivotal challenges across the honey value chain by bolstering the capabilities of Ethiopian quality infrastructure institutions and service providers. With a primary focus on enhancing production and export standards of honey and beehive products, the initiative targets markets in the European Union and Norway.

By engaging stakeholders across the entire value chain—from beekeepers to processors to exporters—the sustainable practices are promoted to uphold quality standards in beekeeping. This collaborative effort not only aims to elevate Ethiopia's honey and beeswax on the global market but also promises to foster economic growth and sustainability within the sector.
