UNIDO supports Ukraine to increase the quality in the woodworking industry
Marking the official launch of UNIDO project “Realizing export potential of the wood and processed wood value chain in Ukraine by strengthening related quality infrastructure”, the First Project Steering Committee Meeting took place virtually on 24 July 2020.
The inception report, together with the findings of the Value chain analysis of the wood sector in Ukraine, was presented at the meeting. The committee members agreed on the two recommended value chains, namely children's furniture and wooden windows, for further project support. “The Ukrainian quality infrastructure system is constantly improving to match global best practices, so it is important to cooperate in the implementation of international projects”, said Tetyana Melnychenko, a representative of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, Acting Chairman of the Project Steering Committee. "In order to achieve the main goal of the Project, namely to increase Ukraine's export potential in this area, close cooperation of all stakeholders, including business associations, is important," said Viktor Shutkevych, representative of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
The project is a part of the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP) implemented by UNIDO with the support of SECO. The objective is to strengthen quality and standards compliance services for the Ukrainian wood and processed wood SMEs’ and to promote the use of those services among the value chain participants to ultimately facilitate market access.The project will cooperate with the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, National Accreditation Agency of Ukraine (NAAU), Ukrainian Agency of Standardization (UAS), State Enterprise “Ukrmetrteststandard”, Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers (UAFM) and Ukrainian Association of Window Technologies (UAWS).
