UNIDO supports Laboratory Association in Georgia

On 2 March 2022, UNIDO and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA) launched the Georgian Laboratory Association (GeLab), a leading platform that was recently revamped to better support coordination and cooperation among individual actors in conformity assessment. The launching represented a major step forward in capacity building efforts through the implementation of the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP) in Georgia, funded by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of Switzerland.

More than 100 participants attended the launching event, including representatives from MEPA, Members of Parliament, Georgian laboratories, other conformity assessment bodies, different associations, educational institutions and universities and international partners.

Discussion focused on the central role of GeLab in the promotion of nationwide laboratory capability, its implication for export and value chain development, partnership building and the designing of a roadmap to sustain the future development of the national laboratory infrastructure in Georgia.

GeLab represents an ideal body for sustainable strengthening of the Georgian laboratory infrastructure in terms of knowledge sharing, talent training, network building and capacity upscaling. To strengthen the institutional capacity of GeLab, UNIDO and its partners conducted organizational restructuring and visibility-building activities. Additional assistance to enhance its technical competence, including the establishment of a training center and database, are currently underway.
