UNIDO Strengthens Global Collaboration at ISO Annual Meeting 2024

UNIDO participated actively in the ISO Annual Meeting 2024 held in Cartagena, Colombia from September 9-13, 2024. The event brought together key international stakeholders to address global challenges, with UNIDO contributing to discussions on climate adaptation, the role of partnerships and collaboration, and bridging development gaps between countries.

On September 11th, UNIDO organized a side event titled "Partnerships for sustainable development: fostering trust through quality and standards". Distinguished speakers included Philippe Metzger, Secretary General of the IEC, Roberto Montoya, CEO of ICONTEC in Colombia and co-host of the ISO annual meeting 2024, Ha Mien Hiep, Acting Director General of STAMEQ in Vietnam, Zul Amri, Head of BSN in Indonesia, Jaymi Stephens, Head of Strategic Partnerships at ISO, and Daniel Trello, Deputy Head of Standardization at ICONTEC. The lively discussion highlighted the importance of partnerships in standardization for addressing climate change, advancing circular economy, developing blue economies and supporting sustainable development. Technology was identified as a key enabler for a green transition, with leapfrogging opportunities for emerging economies. The need for increased global and national collaboration was emphasized by all speakers.

The Spanish version of the publication "Tackling Climate Change: fostering trust in climate action with quality and standards" was also presented at the event, highlighting the important role quality infrastructure can play in addressing the global climate challenge, with practical examples from different organizations and countries.

UNIDO and ISO have partnered for over 40 years to contribute to normative work and capacity building in developing countries. Through these collaborations, UNIDO continues to foster knowledge sharing and quality infrastructure capacity building, supporting countries in transitioning towards more sustainable industrial practices.
