UNIDO Champions Metrology – Measurement for all times, for all people
Paris, 20 May 2025- As the global community marks World Metrology Day and the 150th anniversary of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is highlighting its pivotal role in advancing metrology worldwide, particularly in developing and transition economies, in a newly released video.
Metrology-the science of measurement-forms the backbone of industrial development, fair trade, innovation, and quality of life. Since the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which established the BIPM, international collaboration in measurement science has driven progress in manufacturing, public health, environmental protection, and economic growth.
UNIDO has a long-standing commitment to strengthening national and regional metrology systems. Through its comprehensive programmes, UNIDO:
- Equips national metrology institutes with cutting-edge instruments and technical expertise to perform accurate and reliable measurements.
- Boosts industries by training businesses to master measurements. This allows small and large producers to use precise testing to guarantee quality and safety while unlocking exports to global markets.
- Connects countries in sharing knowledge across borders, supporting labs to collaborate to harmonize measurements, making goods safer and trade fairer.
- Strengthens Quality Infrastructure - the system of organizations, policies, and regulations that ensures goods and services are safe, reliable, and meet international standards.
UNIDO’s impact is amplified through strategic partnerships with BIPM and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML). On this milestone anniversary, UNIDO joins the international community in celebrating the legacy and future of metrology. As the world looks ahead, UNIDO’s work ensures that the benefits of accurate measurement-“measurements for all times, for all people”-remain accessible to every nation, fostering equity and prosperity worldwide.
