UNIDO celebrates the World Metrology Day

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) joins the international metrology community in celebrating World Metrology Day 2022. World Metrology Day is an annual commemoration of the original signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875.

This year’s theme of “Metrology in the Digital Era” is fitting given the digital transformation of our daily lives being brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Metrology, being the science of measurement and its application, has a critical role to play in the digital transformation of our world since measurements make up the majority of the data that gets converted into the information required to make decisions. In order for this information to be useful to both humans and machines, the data must be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR).

The ongoing work of the international metrology community on such topics as the Digital SI, Digital Calibration Certificates, Metrology Cloud, Laboratory Automation and Metrology for Sensor Networks is very exciting. UNIDO takes this opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) as well as the Regional Metrology Organizations and National Metrology Institutes worldwide.

UNIDO looks forward to continuing to work with its partners within the metrology community and wishes all a Happy World Metrology Day 2022.
