Typical food products for sustainable rural development in Georgia
Typical food products or “terroir products” are deeply rooted in their territory of origin, which is granting them unique characteristics. Over the past decade, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has been working on identifying and promoting collective branding and market access for terroir products across the world. By supporting the development of terroir products, a country can increase the income of the rural population, particularly women and youth, preserve jobs and ensure local economic development.
In Georgia, under the project “Identification of typical Georgian food/terroir products”, with financial support of the Czech Government and in close partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, UNIDO has conducted a mapping of terroir products in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Tusheti regions.
Based on the mapping it is foreseen to implement technical assistance interventions to improve the quality, standards compliance and market access of selected terroir products.
