Tajik textile enterprises diversify production to help prevent the spread of COVID-19
As of 14 April, with the authorities having taken drastic measures to help keep the coronavirus at bay, Tajikistan had no confirmed COVID-19 cases. To further help avoid a health crisis, several national textile enterprises have started adding new production lines to provide much-needed supplies of protective equipment to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
A hands-on training series on manufacturing of medical masks was held for employees at textile companies Guldaston and Suman, partners of the UNIDO project “Industrial modernization and competitiveness improvement of carpet weaving, embroidery and textile sectors in Tajikistan”. Held as part of the project’s capacity-building activities, trainings were adjusted to the needs of textile companies concerned about their ability to produce masks in sufficient numbers because of a lack of relevant sewing skills among their personnel.
As demand for medical masks grows, Tajik textile enterprises are planning to further expand production, setting up sterile medical mask production lines upon receiving certification confirming compliance to national standards. This step will allow to meet the frenzied demand for medical masks both locally and abroad, while also creating permanent jobs and spurring the production of domestic cotton fabric.
