Setting the foundation for the green reconstruction of Ukraine

13 June 2023 – UNIDO, the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the National Standardization Body (UAS), CEN and CENELEC jointly conducted the hybrid event ‘’Green Reconstruction of Ukraine - The Role of Sustainability Standards and Technical Regulations’’. The session was organized in the framework of the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP), implemented by UNIDO and funded by the Government of Switzerland, through its State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

Over 120 national and international stakeholders joined the hybrid event, including representatives of national ministries, the European Union (EU Delegation to Ukraine, DG-Grow, DG-Near), EBRD, UNECE, GIZ, PTB, standardization bodies and institutes such as BSI, DIN, SIS and Austrian Standards, national and European associations, and the private sector.

Moved by the common goal to support a green pathway for Ukraine, speakers and participants discussed the importance of integrating sustainability practices, codified into international standards, into Ukrainian public policies, prior to the post-conflict reconstruction process. Green reconstruction will be crucial as well to Ukraine’s ambition for European Union membership, which requires alignment with sustainability principles, climate targets and legislation.

The gathering marked the beginning of a series of events that will be organized to inform the development of a National Guiding Framework of Standards and Technical Regulations for the green reconstruction of Ukraine. This Framework will set the foundation for reconstruction initiatives and ensure that Ukraine can leverage such efforts to significantly reduce its carbon footprint, minimize potential climate impact and increase energy and resource efficiency - thereby becoming a pioneer of such practices.

The event also served as a platform to identify cooperation opportunities among national and international actors, leverage complementary expertise and raise awareness on ongoing and foreseen initiatives to support the country’s resilience and reconstruction.
