The National Metrology Institute of Armenia Unveils State-of-the-Art Electrical Calibration Laboratory

Yerevan, Armenia, September 5, 2024 – National Body of Standards and Metrology (NBSM), Armenia's National Metrology Institute unveils a state-of-the-art electrical calibration laboratory. This significant milestone was achieved with the support of the European Union (EU) through the "Support to Quality Infrastructure in Armenia" project, implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The new NBSM Electrical Calibration Laboratory is set to fill a crucial gap in ensuring the traceability of electrical measurements across Armenia. The laboratory’s services will cater to a wide range of industries, including manufacturers of electronic devices, appliances, cables, and utility meters, as well as power generation and distribution companies. The lab will also serve testing laboratories and certification organizations, ensuring precision and reliability in electrical measurements.

Mr. Narek HovakimyanDeputy Minister at MoE, stated: “I would like to extend my gratitude to our international partner organizations, specifically to the European Union Delegation to Armenia and UNIDO, without their support this would have been impossible. I would also like to reflect on the political and economic significance of this project. You cannot converse on quality of products if you do not have a quality infrastructure, if you do not have sufficiently equipped testing labs to ascertain the quality of products.”

Mr. Frank Hess, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Armenia, noted: “The European Union is proud to contribute to better ensuring calibration of electrical measurements in Armenia which will provide more trust to both producers and consumers in Armenia.

Mr. Zhirayr Edilyan, UNIDO Country Representative, mentioned: For decades, UNIDO has been cooperating with the Government of Armenia by identifying priorities to assist Armenia to access new markets and increase country’s competitiveness. In this regard, ensuring quality, standards and changes in this system have become very important.

The project "Support to Quality Infrastructure in Armenia", designed to enhance Armenia’s national metrology systemrepresents a crucial step towards aligning Armenia's metrology practices with international standards and good practice and is pivotal for Armenia’s commitment to the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the EU. The project aims to fortify Armenia’s legal, institutional, and technical metrology frameworks to ensure the development and delivery of sustainable and internationally recognized metrology services. By strengthening these core areas, the project will further support Armenia’s broader objectives of improving economic diversification and trade competitiveness.
