MSME Day 2022: Resilience and rebuilding, MSMEs for sustainable development

UNIDO has joined UN agencies, private sector and government leaders to celebrate Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) as a driving force in building back better and stronger from the impacts of the pandemic, climate crisis and conflicts.

The online event that took place on 27 June 2022 in a hybrid format in New York, was hosted  by the International Trade Centre (ITC), together with the Permanent Mission of Argentina to the United Nations in New York, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the International Council for Small Business (ISCB), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and UNIDO.

In his opening statement, Gerd Müller, Director General of UNIDO, declared that UNIDO stands ready to help MSMEs become more sustainable, help them scale up and integrate into markets and highlighted that UNIDO would be strengthened as a technology and knowledge transfer platform.

As part of the discussion, Ralf Bredel, Director and UNIDO Representative to UN and international organizations, and Claudia Linke Heep, UNIDO Deputy Representative, New York Office, brought up key findings and recommendations from the Industrial Development Report (IDR) 2022 on the future of industrialization in a post-pandemic world and moderated session on women in development to discuss policies and ecosystem innovation to support women-run MSMEs, respectively.

In a live panel session, entrepreneurs from various countries, including from UNIDO project in Georgia, shared their experiences and recommendations on innovations and pivoting in times of crisis.
