Moldova advances standards compliance for trade

CHISINAU, 3 March 2025 – Enhancing the export of Moldovan agricultural products to global markets requires innovative approaches in strengthening its compliance with international regulations. The newly published Standards Compliance Analytics (SCA) Country Report for Moldova and “Salmonella Control Programme in Poultry Industry”, supported by UNIDO under the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP), emphasizes the importance of data-driven interventions.

The seminar capacitated the broiler meat and egg producers on topics such as national and EU legislation, salmonella prevention, biosecurity measures, vaccination protocols, and sample collection for laboratory testing.  Approximately 55 participants attended the seminar, which was also accredited by the College of Veterinary Doctors of the Republic of Moldova. It was particularly timely given Moldova's growing export opportunities, with three companies authorized to export poultry products to the EU in 2024.

However, given that Moldovan producers still face high border rejection rates and a lack of information and guidelines on how to export in line with the EU and EFTA market requirements, as additional measures within GQSP intervention in Moldova, UNIDO issued the SCA Report on Border Rejections in Major Global Markets for Moldova. The SCA tool is used to facilitate the use of border rejection data to identify the key compliance challenges faced by exporters and thereby enhance targeting of investments in building relevant compliance capacities.

The report identified diverse causes across key international markets such as the European Union, the United States, China, Japan, and Australia. These causes include additives (24%) and other contaminants (20%), labeling (10%), packaging (10%), and veterinary drugs residues (10%).

The main findings of this report will further guide interventions in GQSP Moldova as project focuses on enhancing the capacity of export-oriented enterprises to comply with market requirements, as well as improving knowledge and access to information on market entry requirements under prevailing FTAs.
