Member States validate framework to upgrade the pharmaceutical industry in the West Africa region

ABIDJAN, 13 November 2018 – A joint framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) aimed at upgrading the region’s pharmaceutical industry in line with international Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards was successfully validated today by the Community’s Member States during a stakeholders meeting organized in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The framework was developed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with support from the West African Health Organization (WAHO) as part of a collaboration which began in January 2017.

Chaired by the President of the West African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, Dr. Akpa, the meeting also highlighted strategic and technical follow-on initiatives that need to be conducted for the pharmaceutical industry in West Africa to reach its potential for improving access to quality essential medicines while directly contributing to the economic growth of the ECOWAS region.
