Ensuring Industrial Safety The Role of Government, Regulations, Standards and New Technologies

Industrial processes are exposed to dangers such as natural hazards, political instability (sabotage), and cyber-attacks. These can cause massive damage to industry, workers and the environment. International coordination is essential to provide countries with best practice examples of how industrial safety is detected, mapped, regulated, monitored, and what are the suitable risk-mitigation measures to be taken using new innovative technologies and approaches.

UNIDO publication titled “Ensuring Industrial Safety: The Role of Government, Regulations, Standards and New Technologies” regards such aspects of industrial safety as industrial product and process safety; material safety; occupational health and safety; workplace safety; technical equipment safety; building and structural safety; environmental safety; and cyber security. UNIDO outlines that it is crucial to constantly adopt innovative approaches in order to improve effectiveness and invest in building monitoring capacities for ensuring industrial safety and security. Hence, this publication highlights new approaches, resolutions and best practice examples.

This publication draws on the key takeaways from the International Conference on Ensuring Industrial Safety, held in Vienna in May 2019. The conference is an example of investing in continuing efforts to achieve industrial safety in all countries, so that no one is left behind. UNIDO is dedicated and will furthermore organize an expert group meeting to take place in March 2020 to discuss possibilities of foundation of multi-stakeholder programs to further address industrial safety issues on international level.
