Applying industry 4.0 tools in the Colombian automotive industry
UNIDO, through the project “Sustainable and inclusive industrial development of the automotive supply chain in Colombia through enhanced quality and productivity”, in 2019 supported the organization of 5 awareness and policy advisory sessions on industry 4.0. The events took place in 3 different cities and covered 219 participants from various sectors. They featured presentations by international experts from Dassault Systemes, SAP and Fraunhofer Institute / Technical University of Berlin – contacts, which derived from the participation of project stakeholders at the Hannover Messe 2019.
The topics discussed included, amongst others:
- Trends, challenges and opportunities in the automotive industry today
- Product development, simulation, and prototyping
- Digitizing lean activities and promoting digital collaboration
- Industry 4.0 in supply chain, logistics, and procurement
- Best management and use of industrial data
- Quality 4.0 – quality strategies in the context of industry 4.0
In 2020, it is envisaged to open a call to receive proposals for the application of industry 4.0 tools in cooperation with the TU Berlin and Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology.
The visit of the international experts was also used to provide advice to the National Planning Department of Colombia (DNP) for the new Industry 4.0 Policy Document, which is currently being elaborated. Within this context, experiences in the development and implementation of relevant public policies from emerging economies such as Brazil were shared.
The project also actively supports local automotive component manufacturers in the design and development of new products and introduces new software solutions (including cloud-based) as economical alternatives to the established ones, that can be used by SMEs.
The project is a collaboration between UNIDO, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia (MINCIT), and the “Colombia Productiva” programme.
