Circular economy solutions to address plastic pollution

virtual

This event is an official side event of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Nearly 80% of marine plastic pollution originates from land-based activities. In 2019, 130 million metric tons of single-use plastic products were thrown away, of which 35% were burned, 31% buried in sanitary landfills, and 19% dumped directly on land or into the ocean as pollution .

Circular economy solutions implemented along single-use plastic value chains have a great potential to address this global challenge. Panellists representing policymakers, the private sector and informal waste pickers will share their experiences with circular economy solutions, successful partnerships, collaboration, and policy coordination.

The side event will demonstrate how holistic solutions such as circular approaches can contribute to achieving SDGs 14, 5, 8, 9, 12 and 17.

The interactive panel discussion will be open to the public.
