AFD supports the development of Geographical Indications (GI), which highlights region-specific products, guarantees its quality and fights against counterfeits by protecting and linking a unique region’s name to a product (manufactured or natural). The technical assistance mainly focuses on supporting professional associations which ensure the product’s special charter is respected and which prepare their members for external controls enforced by the States or international organizations responsible for agreeing and maintaining or removing the GI. Numerous examples come from Asia (Cambodia “Pepper of Kampot”; Vietnam “Nuoc Mam of Binh Phuoc”) or Africa (Cameroun “Penja pepper / Guinea / Ziama coffee).
