UNDP supports South-South and Triangular Cooperation with the objective to maximize its development impact and accelerate poverty eradication and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. In 2015, UNDP reported 689 projects and programmes across 132 countries that have utilized South-South and triangular cooperation.

UNDP’s plays the role of a knowledge broker, capacity development supporter and partnership facilitator when developing countries work together to find solutions to common development challenges.

Examples of UNDP’s South-South and trilateral cooperation programmes include the following:

China-UNDP cooperation for the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the SDGs

In September 2016 UNDP and China through the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation for the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Chinese President Xi Jinping presented the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to jointly build the “Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road” during visits to Central and Southeast Asia in 2013. Through connectivity, it will foster unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds.

2016 Global Governance Forum jointly organized by UNDP and the Government of China focused on ‘Belt and Road, New Path to Regional Development.’ The Forum explored the linkages and potential impact of the Belt and Road Initiative for the sustainable development agenda and its synergies with the existing global governance system. The Forum addressed trade-related linkages among participating countries including discussions about the promotion of sustainable development of transport and economic corridors under the Belt and Road Initiative.

The BRI will further work on issues related to investment promotion facilities across participating countries.

Made in Africa Initiative

The Made in Africa Initiative (MIA) aims to help African countries capitalize on the experience of China and other Asian economies to identify their comparative advantage and capture the window of opportunity for industrialization. By bridging the gap in information the initiative will work with African countries, prospective Chinese investors and international buyers to generate quick successes in export orientated manufacturing, while at the same time promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

UNDP’s collaboration on Made in Africa Initiative aims to align the Initiative with sustainable business development in Africa better.

In 2016, Made in Africa Initiative already conducted consultancy work in the National Industrial Planning and Free Trade Zone and Industrial Park implementation plan for the Government of Djibouti. In Senegal, the initiative assisted the government design and constructed the 1st industrial park in the country.
