The IDB Integration and Trade Sector (INT) has taken a leading role in efforts to deepen South-South Cooperation (SSC) as the Bank’s focal point in this area.

Initiative for the Promotion of Regional Public Goods

The Regional Public Goods (RPG) Initiative supports the Bank’s clients in tackling development challenges or seizing development opportunities that can be addressed more effectively and efficiently at a regional level through collective action and cooperation, adding value to national interventions.

The IDB created the RPG Initiative in 2004, amid an international debate on global public goods and the incentive and governance structures needed to facilitate the provision of these goods. Since then, the RPG Initiative has financed 140 projects, investing a total of US$ 103 million. The program is considered unique in fomenting South-South cooperation (SSC) among Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) countries using the collective design of development solutions. It responds to a rise in demand for multi-country policy coordination at a time when the progressive integration of goods, services, and factor markets in LAC and between LAC and the rest of the world generates externalities that create opportunities for SSC.

During the 2016 Call for Proposals, the RPG Initiative received a record number of 117 proposals for a total of $103.8 million in requested financing. After an exhaustive review process, the IDB Board of Executive Directors approved funding for 15 proposals for a total of $9.45 million.

South cooperation (SSC) joint initiative: Inter-American Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank

The ADB and IDB launched a joint South-South cooperation initiative in 2012 to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices between their respective regions, which has resulted in substantive collaboration on various topics. In 2016, cooperation activities continued in the areas of Inclusive Business and Aquarating.

Support to LAC Participation in the Post-Busan South-South Cooperation Agenda

Support has been provided to the post-Busan work program through contributions received from the Republic of Korea and managed by the IDB. Recent activities include two editions of a six-week online tutored course on the Fundamentals of International Development Cooperation and a task force of cooperation agencies working with the OECD Development Assistance Committee.
