The IAEA provides legislative assistance to the Member States in the establishment of adequate and comprehensive national legal frameworks for the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear energy and ionizing radiation under regional projects in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.

The IAEA established new national TCPs for the Marshall Islands, Palau, Fiji and Papua New Guinea and is working on establishing the first national TCP for Vanuatu as of 2018. In particular, the IAEA is seeking to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) with the establishment of an effective regulatory infrastructure, including the establishment of an independent regulatory authority and the promulgation of necessary legal frameworks, since this constitutes the basis for all future areas of support in which radiation sources are involved.
