WIPO is committed to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in the wide world of intellectual property. The organization has various initiatives to support the innovation and creativity of women in a number of countries. Supporting rural basket weaving women in Kenya to develop their regional brand is just one of them. In 2016, WIPO published the first-of-its-kind global view on women inventorship as reflected in international patent applications, which showed a clear gender gap, as well as an increasing trend of women inventors in the last two decades. Through WIPO’s Policy on Gender Equality, the organization is making further efforts to mainstream gender in its substantive programs and has 24 Gender Focal Points covering all areas of WIPO’s work as of February 2017. WIPO regularly updates its web page dedicated to women and intellectual property with the aim to promote good practices and inspirational role models.
