This year’s Global Review takes place against the backdrop of overlapping crises. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to exert a toll on human health and cause turmoil in global trade.  Economies everywhere face inflationary pressures with high food and energy prices hitting poor people hardest – and placing additional pressures on hard-pressed public budgets. These pressures are further exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and food security concerns that it has caused.

Within the framework of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Eight Global Review of Aid for Trade, which will take place under the theme “Empowering Connected, Sustainable Trade” from 27 to 29 July 2022, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Germany will host a session to discuss the opportunities for industrial development created by green hydrogen and to address structural elements of national and international energy trade.

Nearly 80% of marine plastic pollution originates from land-based activities. In 2019, 130 million metric tons of single-use plastic products were thrown away, of which 35% were burned, 31% buried in sanitary landfills, and 19% dumped directly on land or into the ocean as pollution .
